Randy Landau never wanted to play anything but bass. He began on electric bass in 1966, at the age of 12. At 19, the Jazz bug bit him and he bagan to study upright (or Contrabass, as he calls it), as well. Although self-taught for most of his career, he was recently accepted as an upright student by master educators Homer Mensch, Alvin Brehm, and Judith Sugarman.

Randy”s recording and touring credits span a broad spectrum of musical styles. Everything from Chuck Berry, The Temptations, and The Four Tops to Larry Coryell, and the New York Voices, to the August Symphony, East Bay Symphony and Prmoetheus Orchestra. He”s also played for Broadway productions and national tours of Man of La Mancha, Bombay Dreams, Rent, Spamalot, City of Angles and Aida.

Known in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco as a “doubler” (meaning he plays both electric and upright), Randy is one of the top calls on “The Street,” and has worked for just about every hit show on Broadway, including RENT, Spamalot, Legally Blond, City of Angels and many many more. Currently, you”ll find him in the pit for the hit show,Billy Elliot. He”s also on the cast album for Next to Normal.

“I”ve been a fan of David”s gear since he was designing cabinets for SWR,” Randy says. “I”ve had the opportunity to use, and endorse, just about all the amps and cabinets on the market and I have yet to find anything that even comes close to what I get from David.”

This time around, however, we”re raising the bar. Since Randy is one of the top pit players in the world, it only makes sense that we work with him to develop our new pit-worthy combos.

“It”s funny in a way,” Randy says, “because I”m not a technical person. But David has been listening to everything I say, and using it build my dream combo.”
