John Mullen

John’s been playing bass since his sophomore year of high school… 12 years now. A guitar player buddy at school said they needed a bass player, and John responded… “what’s a bass?”. The rest is history. To this day he still plays bass alongside his favorite guitar player and best friend. John has always played in metal bands, but when practicing at home he’d play along to many different genres. Being in a progressive metal band provides the freedom to bring all of those different styles together, and create something new, or even something simple that let’s the guitar’s do their thing and really shine. Something he’s only recently started to admire about bass and its role.

John currently performs in the progressive metal band Voraflux based out of Charlotte, NC. By combining exotic riffs with piercing leads and atmospheric harmonies, VoraFlux has a created a punchy, groove-centric identity that floods listeners with a wall of sound along the lines of… As I Lay Dying, BTBAM, Revocation, Gojira, and August Burns Red.

“What I love about my DNA tone is the power. I’ve always played off of feel, and feeling the rumble, the wall of sound I provide behind the guitar. There’s something special, and honestly challenging, about the way we set our tones. My low end must be powerful enough to support the guitar’s and deliver a punchy drive that gives a feeling of non stop energy. While also shining through on the high end, when the bass is truly meant to be heard, or even harmonizing with the guitar’s on some sections.

That’s what I love about the DNA-800 bass head. I’m used to having to run multiple pedals just to achieve a desired tone, and that’s before adding effects or anything else to the mix. But with my DNA-800 and a little drive, I achieve my tone with ease, and without having to adjust much when we play a new venue. And the on-board compressor is better than any compressor pedal I’ve ever used! I see my DNA-800 staying as a permanent part of my rig for a long time to come. I love this thing, and I’m so excited to push it even further and see what new and exciting tones I can achieve!”
