I was just kidding - it's never bad to say Happy Birthday to someone. Happy Belated rinos88!

Haha, yes, my birthday hijacked the thread.

I'm so glad it was a quick and easy fix. David is super prompt with shipping stuff back. I think it took 2 days when he was shipping me something.

We'll need a 72 page gig report once you get to take it out. :)

I can do that! I'm hopeful that it comes today or tomorrow because I have a rare full weekend of gigs and I am itching to A/B it with my Eden WT550.

I don't have much experience with the WT550, but I do believe these heads outdo the old WT800, which was the amp that I judged all others against.

I had a 550 right before I got my 1350. The 550 was a good amp but everything is just better on the 1350 IMO. It's light, the shape knob is much more usable than the enhance, the compressor is top notch and I love where the EQ points are. The Eden does have the adjustable frequencies for the EQ but I don't miss it with the DNA 4 band. Just my .02!

Stupid internet dumping my review and pics. Thanks Obama.

So, after a comedy of errors, I finally got my amp on Friday. I took it for a very quick spin before I left for a weekend of gigs and did a comparison with the WT550.

The 800 edges out the 550, in my opinion. The 550 has the edge with eq versatility, but it's tone has always been a bit lifeless to me, no air, so to speak. The enhance knob is great, but also has the added edge of making everything sound too crunchy in a heavy metal way. It's great live when cranking it all the way and playing Sympathy for the Devil, but otherwise, not so much.

The 800 is a bit smoother and the 4 band eq works well. I dialed in the tone I like almost immediately without using the shape knob. The compressor is nice, but I haven't found a good use for it live yet. More on that in a minute.

Today, I used the 800 for two one hour shows on a small stage with a blues/rock trio with no PA support. Like every other class D amp, it feels like I need to turn it up more to get the same perceived volume as I get from the 550. I had the 800's master at about 1:00. The 550's master is usually at 11:00 or 12:00 o'clock. Nevertheless, it powered my two twelves without an issue. I had the gain set to 12:00 running my active Warwick through it without any issues.

The live sound of the 800 has many similarities to the 550, but the shape knob is where things are vastly different, and superior, Imo. The shape knob achieves it's adjustments in a much smoother way than the enhance knob. I love it. I had a nice, fat, low-mid crunch coming from the amp, although I made a few adjustments as I thought it was a touch muddy, and I got my usual Geddy-Lee-lite crunchy tone. More on the compressor - I tried it out at home and I think for recording purposes it could work well, but for me, I don't like the loss of volume and I don't want to drive the amp harder than I need to (I ripped a speaker once from too much compression and eq so I am a bit squeamish about using it live). I would be in favor of adding a separate drive channel that could be blended like the Ashdown and ditch the compressor seeing as how the 800 has no side chain feature.

Bottom line is the weight and the shape knob seal the deal for me. The Eden will be posted on eBay.

Excellent review, good sir! I'm so happy that you finally got it.

I see that you've also found the nice, slightly driven sweet spot on that amp. Once I found it on my 1350, I was blown away.

The compressor took me a little getting used to, so I think with a little time and tweaking, you'll really dig it.

I'm thinking of switching to the DNA-800. Can anyone compare it to an Aguilar ToneHammer 500? I use it with two DNS-112N cabinets.

I've never played with that particular preamp, but I can say that my 1350 blows away every other preamp I've tried.

JMSRocketBass,

I tried a Tone Hammer at one point out of curiosity. Took it to Hoot Nite with both my D112's. I initially liked the Tone Hammer but live, I found it muddy compared to the Eden and the DNA. I think you will find the DNA having more clarity and a richer tone. However, the tone won't be as dirty as a Tone Hammer can get from what I can recall.
