Combos

Postby rinos88 » Fri Feb 27, 2015 12:29 pm

As now the cabs have been out for a few years and the 1350 making it's way into the hands of players, I'm now wondering about combo amps.

I am constantly playing through my old N8 for home practice that doesn't require my big rig. I'm thinking that maybe David could build the ultimate combo amp with his current technology. The one combo amp to rule them all.

Considering the love for the DNS112, it would be nice to see an amp of at least a few hundred watts mated to it.
I believe that focusing on building one combo, as opposed to a whole line could be very beneficial for the company and players alike, for a few different reasons.

1. It would put DNA product in the hands of a lot more players. Companies make more money off of selling their smaller, more affordable products at a higher volume than they do their larger or more expensive lines. It allows people to buy into the company at a small price, while they save for their bigger rig.

2. People like me that need the big rig for giant shows also need something smaller and portable for smaller gigs and studio work. Example: I've played across the world to audiences that are in the hundreds and many times thousands of people. However, I'm also playing each weekend at church to a much smaller crowd. A combo would be perfect for that.

3. Parents who have children that are just starting out on bass or starting in bands can have an affordable, yet efficient and toneful setup for them. We all know that playing on great gear makes a huge difference. It also makes learning to play so much easier and enjoyable.

I, for one, would be willing to invest money in the development of a DNA112 combo. My preferences for it would be to have:

1. At least 200 watts. (Preferably 500)
2. Simple 3 band EQ
3. Simple, soft knee compressor
4. DI like the 1350

To me, this would be a streamlined and affordable for many people. It would also be a way to gain more sales from people who aren't ready to buy the big rig or already have it.

Thoughts?

Your idea is not new.
David is already working on something.

I'm reviving an elderly thread here because I can't stop thinking about how versitile a combo would be based off of the DNS112 cabinet. I want one really bad. I didn't see anything from the NAMM show about combos yet, but keep holding out hope.

A good combo would be an affordable way for folks to get into the DNA world, indeed!

Agree. I think a 112 combo would get a lot of buyers and a 210 combo would set the bar for "one size fits all". Probably wouldn't be cheap, but a combo with an amp along the lines of the DNA-800 powering a 210 would be pretty sweet. A 210 combo with an a less expensive 500-watt amp would be pretty nice too

Love those David Nordschow designs!
Amps: Eden WT500/800 (signature model!), Eden Nemesis RS400, Eden TN226
Cabs: DNS-410-8, DNS-210-8, two each Eden EX112-4
Basses: 1982 Fender Jazz (MIA), 2009 Rogue LX405 Pro (surprisingly good 5-string)
