would there be any difference in tone between the two? I'm no lab genius or anything, but i would think the carpet absorbs more, whereas putting rhino liner on it will cause all sound to bounce right off. Does that play any factor? Personally i like carpet. It seems to look better with road wear, and I personally don't mind taking a lint roller to it every now and again.

Bobby Ryan, you're correct that the covering can change the overall character of a cabinet... and it's in the mids where you hear it. It's actually about how the cabinet vibrates. IIRC, David said the two coverings were extremely close... closer than carpet and tolex, which do sound just a little bit different.

By the way... I don't think there will be a "loser" on this poll. But I still want everyone to vote. 8-)

The cabs take a lot more abuse without showing it.

I'm with ya on this - voted for carpet too. Carpet looks better longer than tolex. However....whatever sounds the best is the final key for me. If it doesn't make a difference sonically, then I prefer the carpet.

I took the poll which is a really ironic. I'm tired of my PA rig carpeted cabinets form smeling like stale beer. o I have been looking around for epoxy coatings. I found a company, Dura Tex (http://www.acrytech.com/catalog.asp?pro ... prevnext=1)
that sells the stuff. They can mix any colour you like. Much like a Home Depot or Lowes, they use a computerized color match system. I've ordered some and waiting for delivery to try it out.

More to the point, if things went well, I was thinking of coating my XLT cabinets. I went from carpet to tolex to combat the smells & cleanliness issue. Some clubs in So Cal allow smoking, ether or not it's against the law! Gotta love that stale cig smoke a few days later. But tolex is only so durable.

My brother works for L-Acoustics. They make high end pro audio cabinets & amplifiers. They use a 'special sauce' <rolling eyes> epoxy coating. Turns out that carpet isn't really favored in the pro audio sector. Even on equipment racks. So it's 'rock star' durable.

Maybe we can do carpet now with a custom shop\coated option down the line? We discussed tha tback at the 'ol 'E site' years ago.

Carpet is more durable, will not tear or start to peal off. Cost is an issue, as is durability. As long as a 410 does not weight more than I can lift... I ain't a spring chicken anymore!

If you buy it right the first time, you have nothing to be ashamed of!

Bass: Roscoe SKB 3005 - Sculpted quilt maple top on a swamp ash body. Tobaccoburst finish. 35" scale 24 fret maple neck. Bartolini pickups & 3 band preamp.

one thing I do not like is tolex. . . .yuck. When it peels off, the cabs end up looking horrible - and junky.

My .02. :)
