Nordstrand pup's etc...

This is the folder for discussions about basses. Not about playing bass... but about the instruments themselves.

Nordstrand pup's etc...

Postby bassmayhem » Sat Oct 30, 2010 2:39 pm

Next week I'll meet a guy who wants to build me a five string jazz bass, just like my old maple neck/ash body 70's back breakin' monster, only some two tons lighter and with five strings.

I've considered a 35" scale, Hipshot Ultralites, Hipshot OR ETS tuning fork bridge with full 3/4" spacing. Nordstrand Big Splits and for starter a passive setup with the Stellartone ToneStyler for bass.

I have some questions for you bro's/sis's:
- Anyone has experience with the Nordstrand Big Split pup's?
- Any light weight alternative to the Ultralites that would fit a Jazz Bass?
- Will a passive setup be good with the Nordstrands?

Later on I may add some kind of preamp. Maybe a simple buffer like the Creation Audio Labs Redeemer Circuit.

I just realize I'm a JB guy with a lot of non-JB instruments at hand. If this falls out good I'll do some serious house cleaning...

BTW, my old back is killing me. I try to remedy that with a box of Italian wine...

Good choice of medicine Roger ;)

I would directly go for a preamp with the PU's.

I commision a cement plant in Russia.
It's very interesting and life is good.
And I make some extra money to buy more bass stuff

For the preamp I would use a Audere 3ZB!

Roger , also check out the Aguilar OBP2 preamp
I know a guy over here that uses Nordstrands with that preamp in just about every bass and he pulls some great tones out of them.
Waiting for a new Amp , it's going to be soooo worth the wait !

Yep, They are good Dale.
I use OBP3 in one bass and I'm very happy with it. Very big tone range.
But for the big splits and all the options you have the Audere is better.

Ah well Dr Armin knows best ;)
the bass I was talking about had NJ5S pups and the OBP2 pre sounded great !
He also has a 6 string with big singles and an aguilar pre ( not sure what model )
never seen the splits or that Audere pre.
I really only use passive basses now days anyway
with the EBS MicroBass 2 outboard pre , active is a waste of time and money :)

I got a Bart OBP3 on one of my basses. It is OK, but I'd like something that isn't that much... Volvo... if you know what I mean. I want a bass tone that sticks out a bit, get noticed. The Bart just seems to blend in in a perfect manner... I met the guy today and played one of his own guitars, a really beautiful Les Paul knock-off. Just look:

He hasn't built that many basses, and has none of his own. But from what I've seen he is NO amateur. Look at his Tele:

...and Strat with Les Paul vibe; tilted headstock and mahogany body:

The only bass on his web page is a standard P-bass with no extras:

All in all a very skilled and really nice guy and a good guitar player...

very nice , from the looks of those guitars I think he will make you a very nice J bass indeed.
Go for a top like the Les Paul mmmmm
